Should I Get Saline or Silicone Implants?

If you are considering breast augmentation and are wondering “Should I get saline or silicone implants?”, understanding the differences between these two types of implants will help you with making an informed decision that aligns with your goals and expectations.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution once they are implanted in the breast, which means they require a smaller incision during surgery. This type of implant is often chosen for its adjustability in size, as the saline solution can be filled to the desired volume. Some of the key considerations for saline implants include:

  • Firmness: Saline implants tend to feel less natural than native breast tissue, which may be a consideration depending on your desired look and feel.
  • Rupture Detection: If a saline implant ruptures, the saline solution is harmlessly absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. This makes rupture detection relatively easy as the breast will noticeably deflate.
  • Rippling: Saline implants have increased risk of rippling as compared to silicone breast implants. They are thus a less desirable option in thinner women who have less subcutaneous tissue, or in patients who have undergone mastectomies.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. Many women find silicone implants provide a more natural look and feel compared to saline. Here are some things to consider:

  • Natural Feel: Silicone implants are known for their softer, more natural feel, which can closely resemble the texture of natural breast tissue.
  • Rupture Detection: Detecting a rupture in silicone implants can be more challenging as the gel tends to stay within the implant shell or in the scar tissue surrounding the implant (known as a “silent rupture”).
  • Decreased Risk of Rippling: Due to the cohesive nature of silicone gel, there is a decreased risk of rippling as compared to saline implants.
